Not everyone flies in. The ferry from La Ceiba is the cheaper way onto the island and the only sensible one if you are already travelling the mainland. Here is what the arrival actually looks like, and what to have arranged before the boat docks.
The crossing itself
The Galaxy Wave runs between La Ceiba on the mainland and Roatán, and the crossing takes a little under two hours. It is a large, fast catamaran rather than a small boat, but the channel can be choppy — if you are prone to seasickness, take something before boarding rather than after, and sit low and central.
Where you actually land
The ferry docks at the terminal at Dixon Cove, just east of Coxen Hole and very close to the Mahogany Bay cruise port. It is not in a town and there is nothing much around it: you come off the boat, collect your luggage from the trolleys, and walk out to a small forecourt where taxi drivers are waiting.
What the terminal is and is not
- It is a working dock, not an airport — no shops, no ATMs to rely on
- Luggage is offloaded onto trolleys; larger bags come off last
- The taxi forecourt is small and fills fast when a full boat lands
- There is no scheduled bus service from the terminal to the west side
From the dock to your hotel
Dixon Cove sits in Zone 1, so a private transfer from the ferry prices exactly like an airport run: a flat $55 for 1–4 passengers or $85 for 5–9 to West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, Coxen Hole or French Harbour. The East End is Zone 2 or Zone 3.
| Where you are heading | Drive from the ferry terminal | 1–4 / 5–9 people |
|---|---|---|
| Coxen Hole | 10 min | $55 / $85 |
| French Harbour | 15 min | $55 / $85 |
| West End | 25–30 min | $55 / $85 |
| West Bay | 30–35 min | $55 / $85 |
| Oak Ridge / Jonesville | 40–50 min | $75 / $95 |
| Camp Bay / Punta Gorda | 70–85 min | $95 / $110 |
Why people pre-book this one more than the airport
A full ferry unloads a few hundred passengers into that small forecourt at once, all of them looking for the same taxis at the same minute. Flights trickle; the ferry arrives as a wave. Having a driver already holding a sign is the difference between leaving immediately and negotiating in a queue with your bags on the concrete.
Leaving the island by ferry
Going the other way, plan to be at the terminal roughly an hour before departure — the check-in and luggage line is slower than it looks, and the boat does not wait. Tell us your sailing time and we will build the pick-up backwards from it, the same way we do for flights and cruise all-aboards.
Ready when you are
Send us your sailing date and hotel and we will meet you at the Dixon Cove terminal.
